Small Town Crime

I read the local newspapers a week late when my parents are done with them. We live in a small area so it doesn't take too long to read the papers. A few positive stories but, the majority of the news is negative. It might be a small area, but there's always robbery and thefts. Once in a while there is a murder story.
A recent, local murder story involved a girl who ran over an elderly man. Apparently they were friends from frequenting a local bar. Her story was that he offered her a large amount of money to help him die. He supposedly had been diagnosed with a terminal illness. She agreed to "help" him. She borrowed a friend's car, took him to a back road, bound his hands and feet and ran him over. Awful, awful story. The man's family was unaware of any terminal diagnosis. Lots of holes in her story, so who knows what really happened. She was sentenced to jail time, but was already serving time for an unrelated crime.
There are way too many criminals in this small area of upstate New York. I can't imagine what the newspapers are like in large, crime ridden cities such as Los Angeles. They must be super thick. At least criminals keep los angeles criminal defense lawyers busy.
Crimes in this area date pretty far back. One recent murder case from the 1800's has been revisited in the newspapers lately. There was a woman, Roxalana Druse, who's husband was abusive. She finally had enough and killed him. She cut him up with an ax. She enlisted the help of her daughter and son to get rid of the body. When her husband was discovered missing, she was charged and ended up being hung. A female being hung was pretty newsworthy back then.
Chester Gillette is another famous murderer. He reportedly took his pregnant girlfriend, Grace Brown, out on a boat and killed her. Their story is the subject of a book called An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser. I've actually read it. It's a really good book that I highly recommend.
Lately, it seems like there are more and more criminal stories in the news. The Trayvon Martin case in Florida is a pretty sad case being spotlighted in the news lately. For many of these cases, it's really hard to figure out what exactly has happened. Each side has a different story. California criminal lawyers have a tough job of getting the truth out while still defending their clients.
